Pilot Hot Wheels SSR“Pilot" - the Hot Wheels SSR

"Pilot" has a rich history and is aptly named.  This 2003 Chevrolet SSR was actually the very first SSR to roll off the assembly line, four months before actual production began.  It was originally painted a bright shiney red.

After using this SSR as a promotion and auto show vehicle, Chevrolet sold it to Mattel (we have the original sales document.)  Larry Wood, who is the Hot Wheels designer, created teh "Red Surfin' Wagon" for the 2004 SEMO show in Las Vegas.  It then became Larry's personal truck - he liked it that much.

In 2013, this truck was redesigned for a Hot Wheels promotion.  It was puposely painted from the rich red to army green with faux rust, and wood side rails were added as a unique accent.  It was then featured as a "work truck" in a virtal video series.  Hot Wheels created a farce that was an internet and TV sensation -- the "Hot Wheels Test Facility" where every Hot Wheels car and track is first tested with real cars in a full size test facility.  The acronym (HWTF) are the letters painted on the side of Pilot.  The promotion was run on TV commercials, viral videos, in packaging and even with DVD videos inside the Hot Wheels toys.

Pilot still retains the original one-off "Hot Wheels" wheels as well as the 900w Kicker Amp in the truck bed.

This one-of-a-kind SSR is a very rare vehicle and even has a two-piece retractable top that folds down in less than 25 seconds.

The Flight for the Human Spirit began with a dream after pilot Michael Combs overcame a life threatening illness. He then went on to set six world records and inspire more than 29 million people to follow their dreams.

“Pilot” is a bit of play on words -- the first cars off of the manufacturers line are called pilot cars, and Michael, the owner is a pilot.
